The Non Governmental Association for Literacy Support Services (NOGALSS), an umbrella body of all Non governmental Organizations and individuals involved in mass literacy delivery, has warned that with a large illiterate population, the country is sitting on a time bomb and call for a collective efforts to reverse the ugly trend.
The National President of NOGALSS Noah Emmanuel who made this assertion
in Abuja during a courtesy call to the Executive Secretary of National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non Formal Education Prof Abba Haladu described the situation as alarming and a national emergency.
He said that the high illiteracy rate is having a negative effect
on national productivity, poverty eradication and the overall wellbeing of the citizens.
“We see fighting illiteracy as an investment and our collective responsibility considering the positive impact it would have for the future of young Nigerians,” he said.
He appealed to well meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies to support government’s current efforts in fighting illiteracy in the country.
“Considering the adverse effects illiteracy have on the society, it is time for responsible individuals and NGOs especially small literate percentage to rise and support all efforts aimed at eradicating illiteracy in our society,’ he said.
In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non Formal Education Prof Abba Haladu is also the national patron of NOGALSS promised to support all efforts aimed at fighting illiteracy in the country especially now that the Commission is being revitalized. He warned against arm chair NGOs adding that they must be credible in carrying out their mandates.
